Recently, graduate students from our institute have published a research paper entitled "Recovery of activation propagation and self-sustained oscillation abilities in stroke brain networks" in Physical Review E, a leading journal in statistical physics. Liu Yingpeng, a master's student of our institute, is the first author of the paper, and Professor Zheng Muhua from our institute is the corresponding author. The collaborators include Professor Xu Kesheng and Dr. Wu Jiao. Jiangsu University is the first completing unit.

Based on the analysis of brain network data from a large number of stroke patients, this study reveals that stroke alters properties of the brain network such as connection weights, average degree, clustering coefficient, and community structure. It also finds that in individuals three months after stroke, their brain's activation propagation and self-sustained oscillation abilities are impaired. Most importantly, one year after stroke, due to the self-repair of the brain's structural connections, the patients' activation propagation and self-sustained oscillation abilities are significantly improved. The findings of this paper contribute to understanding the structure-function relationship in brain diseases. This work has been selected as an Editors’ Suggestion by the editorial board of Physical Review E and promoted on its homepage.
This research was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Jiangsu Distinguished Professor Program, among other projects.
